There’s nothing else like a Lyric hearing aid

Hearing Aid

Author: Liam Hickson, Victorian Hearing Audiologist

For those who don’t know, Lyric hearing aids are more like a contact lens than a hearing aid. From the outside, they’re completely invisible, so no one can tell you’re wearing one. Thanks to their long-life battery and low power consumption, they can stay in your ear for up to months at a time. They’re comfortable enough to sleep in without removal and can even be worn in the shower (if you’ve ever had a hearing aid fail after accidentally showering with it, you’re not alone). There’s nothing else like it, and it’s quite possible that you’ve had a conversation with a person wearing a Lyric hearing aid and not even noticed it!

Why should we compromise hearing aid size for sound?

In my 15 years of practicing audiology in various hearing clinics, I had become very used to steering people away from smaller, more discreet hearing aids when helping people select their new hearing devices. I would have this discussion often: my new clients who were considering their first pair of hearing aids would prefer not to wear them unless it was tiny and out of sight. If you’ve watched any advertisements on midday TV or have been on Facebook recently, you’ll know the ones I’m talking about.

I would encourage as many of my clients to choose larger hearing aids styles that sit on top of the outer ear, with a wire snaking down the front of the ear to connect to a speaker (also known as a receiver) inside the ear canal. There were several reasons why this was the case, but it mostly came down to them having better sound quality and performance in background noise over the amazingly small, completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids. Sometimes it would also be because some people have poor vision or a reduction in ability to move their fingers- making tiny hearing aids difficult to manage.

I would compare these CICs to Ferraris: a Ferrari looks great and everyone wants one, but you can’t take it to Bunnings or go on a family road trip in one, and so the better option would be a comfy SUV that can fit everyone and has boot space for some new pot plants. Simply put, small hearing aids look fantastic, but they compromise their performance and function to make everything fit nicely inside the ear. It’s a good analogy, but clients would often express their frustration at being steered away from the invisible, advanced, hearing aids that people have been promised through advertising and word of mouth.

Lyric Hearing Aids- Premium Performance with None of the Drawbacks of a Small Hearing Aid

Now that I work at Victorian Hearing, Australia’s top provider of Lyric hearing aids, I no longer have to routinely persuade my clients to compromise the size and discreetness of a hearing aid in favour of a larger device that works better for them.

Lyric’s strength is in a sound quality is probably the most natural a hearing aid can be- because it sits so deep inside your ear (like a deep ear plug) it can use the natural shape of the outer ear to filter out sounds rather than relying on artificial processing most other hearing aids have to try and imitate the same effect.

If you struggle with managing your hearing aids, Lyric is fully cared for by your audiologist. You simply come to the clinic, relax in a chair, and have the Lyric handled for you by a professional. No batteries, no ear wax filter changing, no need to remember to take it out before bed or bathing. Simple and convenient.
