Most of our clients wear their hearing aids 12 hours/day as is the recommended routine and they are reaping the benefits of increased engagement, understanding conversation and auditory nerve stimulation to enhance long term communication outcomes. They are happier and more confident in their social and family interactions.
However, we do hear at times that some clients wear their hearing aids just a few times a week. Mostly when going out to a social event or appointments and feel they don’t need them when at home or all the time. As Audiologists, we like to remind everyone to wear their aids every day, for as much as the day and evening as possible. The benefits of increased engagement, understanding conversation and auditory nerve stimulation are invaluable for your overall hearing health and wellbeing.
Not wearing hearing aids for even a short period of time can sound different and will take you time to re-acclimatise to your aids. Stimulating your brain by wearing your hearing aids as often as possible keeps you accustomed to the sounds around you.
For people with tinnitus (ringing in the ears), keeping busy and their mind on something other than the tinnitus is recommended. With many of us at home more each day, boredom may have already kicked in, leaving nothing but your tinnitus to focus on. Try to keep busy with something you enjoy – go for walks, get out in the garden, do a jigsaw puzzle, read a book, watch TV, cook?
Just remember, your Audiologists at Victorian Hearing are here to help should you have any concerns or questions.
