From Humble Beginnings to a Trusted Leader in Ethical Audiology as Victorian Hearing Celebrates 20 Years of Specialist Hearing Care

For the past two decades, Victorian Hearing has been quietly redefining what quality, specialist hearing care looks like in Australia. Founded in Melbourne as an independent audiology practice, the organisation has grown from just two clinics, into a trusted network of 11 locations, supporting thousands of patients with personalised, clinically led hearing care. At a time when the industry is often driven by sales targets,

Victorian Hearing has taken a different approach, by prioritising ethical practice, patient outcomes, and innovation every step of the way. Now, as it marks its 20th anniversary as a leader in ethical audiology, the business reflects on a journey shaped not by rapid expansion, but by consistent, values-driven growth built on trust, expertise, and long-term impact.

In the Beginning

In the early 2000s, the founders of Victorian Hearing identified a gap in the market, at a time when many hearing service providers were gaining a reputation for aggressive sales tactics. The vision was clear to create an independent practice free from commissions, where patient outcomes came first. Audiologist and University of Melbourne graduate Nicole Bowden was immediately drawn to this model. She joined Victorian Hearing during its start-up phase in 2006 after 16 years at Australian Hearing, working with children and adults with complex hearing needs. As Principal Audiologist and Manager of Victorian Hearing today, Nicole has dedicated her career to improving the quality of life of many through better hearing, combining deep technical expertise with a genuinely empathetic approach to hearing health and care. Now also a director on the board of the Hearing Business Alliance, Nicole is recognised as a thought leader in the field, particularly for her avid pioneering work with the Lyric invisible hearing aid.

“I was seeking a commission-free environment where I could focus entirely on what was best for the patient, without any sales pressure,” she recalls. “Victorian Hearing was built on ethical, independent principles from day one, where we sought to counter the poor service reputations that were emerging in the industry and instead, prioritise unbiased, patient-focused hearing health and care.”

The very first Victorian Hearing clinic opened its doors in the consulting rooms of an ENT specialist in Clayton, with a small team and a primary focus on the Phonak range of products. A second location soon followed at Cabrini Hospital, strengthening collaborations with ENT specialists and expanding access to hearing care across Melbourne. Referrals were modest at first, but word spread quickly about Victorian Hearing’s reputation for integrity and quality hearing care.

“From the early outset, our relationships with ENT specialists and GPs were everything, they trusted us, because we maintained clinical autonomy and always recommended the right solution, not the most profitable one.” Nicole continues, “That foundation of trust is what allowed us to steadily grow, despite having to navigate complex government contracts and regulations.”

For Victorian Hearing, those early years were not without their challenges. Having to manage regulatory hurdles, to building a referral network from the ground up, the support of former colleagues who had moved into industry roles, provided invaluable guidance on equipment and best practices. It was at this point when in 2012, a seismic shift occurred within the hearing health and audiology space, which saw the introduction of Lyric hearing aids to Victorian Hearing, the first 24/7 invisible hearing solution of its kind in Australia.

“Taking on Lyric was a complete game-changer for the business, as It allowed us to differentiate our brand and offer something truly unique to patients who needed discretion and convenience,” said Nicole. She went on to say, “Lyric aligned perfectly with our commitment to innovation without compromising on ethics.”

Technological Advancements

Over the next decade, Victorian Hearing continued to evolve with the industry. From early programmable hearing aids to today’s AI-powered, Bluetooth-enabled, rechargeable devices, the practice has embraced cutting-edge technology to enhance patient outcomes. In-clinic advancements like micro suction for wax removal and video otoscope equipment have transformed diagnostics, making appointments more engaging and informative. The adoption of Flex trial hearing aids further empowers patients to experience different technology levels on a single device, leading to better customisation and higher satisfaction.

At Victorian Hearing, clinical systems have kept pace with this progression in technological advancements. In 2022, the switch to Counsellor CRM streamlined online bookings, reminders, and reporting, while tools like Heidi Health transcription software, saves audiologists approximately one hour per day on documentation and admin – a significant amount of time that can be better utilised in other more vital areas of the business. In addition to this, an impression scanner now digitises custom ear moulds, reducing costs and improving convenience, a process that would otherwise have had to be done manually. Victorian Hearing’s expanded services today include bone conduction implant programs at Geelong Hospital, advanced tinnitus management, as well as paediatric diagnostics, which has seen the business emerge as the first cochlear implant partner in metropolitan Melbourne, handling all mapping and switch-on processes.

“Technology is only as good as the care that surrounds it,” notes Nicole. “We have always focused on empowering our audiologists to pursue their clinical passions, whether in paediatrics, cochlear implants, tinnitus, or auditory processing disorders, something that has allowed us to offer a breadth of expertise that truly sets us apart.”

At the Heart of it

At the heart of Victorian Hearing’s success is its people. The practice now spans 11 locations with 12 clinicians and a dedicated administrative team, yet it retains the close-knit culture of its early days. Many staff members boast over 10 years of tenure, ensuring continuity for patients who see the same audiologist year after year.

“Long-term relationships aren’t just nice to have, but are central to what we do,” explains Nicole. She goes on to say, “We allocate longer appointment times so our audiologists can truly listen, understand, and build tailored care plans. Our regular full-day team meetings and quarterly admin gatherings keep everyone aligned, while paid professional development opportunities, from conferences to international volunteering, keep skills sharp and morale high.”

This patient-centred ethos of Victorian Hearing extends beyond the clinic, with the business hosting afternoon teas for long-term clients, some of whom have been with the practice for over 18 years. Quarterly newsletters educate GPs and patients alike, while free community screenings, rural outreach, and the sponsorship of local groups like bowls and bridge clubs, further strengthen ties across Victoria. International volunteering missions, including one in the Philippines where hundreds of hearing aids were fitted, reflect the team’s broader commitment to hearing health.

“Gratitude is at the very core of our milestone 20th anniversary,” says Nicole. “We owe everything to our loyal patients and the incredible team who have built this practice with us from the ground up.” She goes on to say, “Their trust and feedback through surveys, reviews, and ongoing conversations, have driven every improvement, from longer warranties to safer, more welcoming clinic environments.”

To the Future and Beyond

As Victorian Hearing looks to the future, the focus remains on measured growth that preserves its unique culture. Plans include converting the Mornington visiting site into a permanent clinic, with a view to offering paediatric and implant services, expanding paediatric care at Geelong, and introducing mentorship programs for audiology students. New educational initiatives will target both patients and referrers, highlighting the links between hearing health, cognitive wellness, and overall quality of life.

“We are committed to innovation, whether it’s AI apps for rehabilitation or the latest in hearing technology, but always through the lens of ethical, independent hearing care,” Nicole affirms. “Our goal is steady expansion that maintains the personal touch our patients have come to value so highly.”

A Trusted Leader

This 20th anniversary is more than just a milestone for Victorian Hearing. It is a celebration of legacy. Special events throughout the year including Lyric open days, cochlear implant client morning teas, and team gatherings in October 2026, will honour the patients, staff, and partners who have been an integral part of the journey from the very beginning.
