Breaking the Stigma Around Hearing Loss

Author: Sandra Lee, Victorian Hearing Audiologist
At Victorian Hearing, we believe hearing loss should never hold you back. Today, hearing technology is sleek, modern and as common as earbuds and Bluetooth headsets. The stigma that once surrounded hearing loss is fading and with the right support, you can live, work and connect with confidence.
What Is Stigma?
Stigma occurs when someone makes assumptions about you because of your hearing loss or hearing aids. Maybe you’ve noticed people speaking louder than necessary, ignoring you in a group conversation or even making jokes. While this can be frustrating, it’s important to remember that hearing loss is nothing to be ashamed of and you are never alone. Research shows that one in six Australians currently suffer from hearing loss. This number is expected to rise to one in four by 2050!
Busting Common Myths
Let’s set the record straight:
• Myth: Hearing loss only happens to older people.
Truth: Hearing loss can affect anyone, at any age.
• Myth: Hearing aids mean you’re weak or broken.
Truth: Hearing aids are empowering tools, just like glasses, that help you enjoy life to the fullest.
• Myth: It’s better to hide hearing loss.
Truth: Being open allows others to support you, so you can connect with confidence.
Taking Control of Stigma
You are part of a strong community. Millions of Australians live with hearing loss, and many thrive with the right strategies. Here’s how you can take positive action:
Talking to Others
- Choose supportive friends or family to share your hearing needs with first.
- Use clear, confident statements such as:
- “My hearing aids help me hear better. Please speak clearly, not louder.”
- “Facing me when you talk really helps.”
- “Can we chat somewhere quieter so I can hear you better?”
- A little humour can ease conversations and help others feel comfortable too.
When People React Poorly
Thankfully this is rare in day to day life as most people will be supportive once they understand your hearing needs. But if you encounter negativity:
- Stay calm, confident, and in control.
- Use the chance to educate if they’re open to learning.
- Set clear boundaries
At Work
Your skills and expertise shine brighter than any stigma. Remember, you have the right to reasonable support, whether that’s better lighting, written instructions, or assistive technology. When you advocate for yourself, you not only make your workplace more accessible but also show the strength of your capabilities.
Building Confidence and Connection
- Talk with your audiologist about how to share your hearing journey with others.
- Connect with people who also live with hearing loss. Peer support is empowering. You can attend your appointments with your friends.
- Focus on your achievements and celebrate every success.
Remember
- Hearing loss is common and there is nothing to hide.
- Hearing aids are powerful tools that give you freedom and independence.
- With the right support, you can enjoy a full, connected and successful life.
